A year and a half after UMass Chan Medical School received official approval to open a Burlington regional campus, school is in session for the first cohort of 32 medical students at UMass Chan-Lahey, a partnership between the Worcester university and Lahey Hospital & Medical Center.

The campus’ inaugural cohort is on the LEAD@Lahey track, which follows the university’s T.H. Chan School of Medicine core curriculum with an integrated focus on leadership, health systems science, and interprofessional education, according to a Thursday press release from UMass Chan.

“This new regional campus benefits not only Burlington, but the surrounding communities,” Dr. Michael Collins, chancellor at UMass Chan, said in the release. “While our initial roots are in Worcester, let me be clear that we are the state’s medical school — the commonwealth’s medical school. We are proud to now go from the Cape to the Berkshires, from Springfield to Burlington.”

The launch of UMass Chan-Lahey marks UMass Chan’s second regional campus. The university established its Population-based Urban and Rural Community Health track at UMass-Chan Baystate in Springfield in 2017.

“Purpose-based leadership, values-based leadership, and lifelong learning are crucial in providing good leadership and health care. I’m excited to continue to practice all of these forms of leadership with my peers and hopefully make a change in the healthcare system,” Sophia Rose, LEAD@Lahey medical student, said in the release.

Along with the launch of UMass Chan-Lahey’s campus, UMass Chan and Lahey Hospital teamed up in March to create the Institute for Healthcare Delivery Science, a collaborative quantitative science research hub designed to promote advances in digital medicine, population health, and healthcare delivery. Lahey Hospital is actively recruiting a director for the research hub.
