Feds issue guidance on automated vehicles

The U.S. Department of Transportation on Tuesday is issuing policy guidelines governing the testing and deployment of automated vehicles, including recommended areas for states to consider in order to have a consistent national framework, according to the White House.

"This policy helps clarify what the safe and responsible testing and deployment of automated vehicles looks like for companies and states, but is only the first step in supporting the safety and responsible development of this technology," the White House said in a fact sheet released Monday night.

President Barack Obama this year proposed $4 billion in investments in automated vehicle pilots and the Department of Transportation announced $40 million to help Columbus, Ohio to become the first city to fully integrate automated vehicle technologies into its transportation network.

While mindful of safety considerations, the Obama White House sees upsides in automated vehicles, including preventing crashes that result from human error, providing mobility options to the elderly and those with disabilities, and reducing transportation costs for families and businesses.

Also, as part of Smart Cities Week, the Obama administration next week plans to announce steps to "help cities continue to shape the future of urban transportation and tackle pressing community challenges with the help of new technologies," according to the White House. And on Oct. 13, innovators plan to gather for the White House Frontiers Conference in Pittsburgh to discuss the life-changing ramifications of investments in science and technology.
