A new muscle-toning device from Marlborough medical device firm BTL Industries previously approved for the abs, butt and thighs is now approved to help tone up the arms and calves.
The company said Tuesday the EMSCULPT device has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use on the additional muscle groups as the company looks to expand the device’s capabilities.
The company’s newly unveiled Small Contour Applicator allows the EMSCULPT to target those areas, BTL said.
BTL previously partnered with Hollywood actor Drew Barrymore to help promote its products.
The company’s Vice President of Marketing John Ferris said in a statement there is a growing demand from physicians and patients to bring the technology to other areas of the body.
The device uses high intensity focused electro-magentic technology to cause powerful muscle contractions which burn fat and tone muscle.
The Small Contour Applicators are designed to target smaller muscle groups via a unique, ergonomic design and adjusted energy field, the company said.
Clinical trials found bicep and tricep muscles showed an increase in muscle mass and a reduction in fat two weeks after the fourth treatment. The treatment also increased volumetric muscle mass in the calves.
According to the company, the device is the only non-invasive treatment to be cleared by the FDA to tone and strengthen the arms and calves.
