Exhibit 'A' Brewing Co. is heading west, as the brewery announced the closure of its taproom and brewing space in Framingham and a plan to move its operations to a small town in Western Massachusetts.
The announcement, made on the company’s website and social media pages on Tuesday, cited licensing challenges with its beer garden and patio.
“Throughout this journey we faced several challenges and have been so proud of the swift navigation and adaptability of our staff,” the announcement reads. “Most recent and notable are the pandemic and licensing challenges to reopen our beer garden and a planned patio that never materialized. We have loved this space, our neighbors, the community and most importantly the friends we have made during our time here.”
Exhibit ‘A’ did not respond to a WBJ request for comment on the move and its impact on its 45 employees.
The business’ new location will be in Williamsburg, a small town of about 2,500 people in the foothills of the Berkshires, about a 97-mile drive from the brewery’s current spot. The announcement states that the new Williamsburg location will have indoor and outdoor seating and more space for events.
The address of the new location was not disclosed. A search of Hampshire District Registry of Deeds records dating back to Jan. 1 did not reveal any real estate transactions involving entities connected to Exhibit ‘A’ in Williamsburg.
The closure will not result in a disruption of the availability of Exhibit ‘A’ brews at retail locations, according to the announcement.
The move follows the company selling its Framingham real estate to a Belmont-based entity in May. Exhibit B Realty LLC, the company’s real estate holding entity, offloaded their brewery location at 81 Waverly St. and a nearby property at 71-72 Waverley St. for $1.6 million on May 24, according to Middlesex South Registry of Deeds records.
The properties were purchased by 64 Waverley Street LLC, a Belmont-based entity managed by Milton Yanofsky of Belmont and Peter Yanofsky of Waltham.
The company was the sixth largest brewery in Central Massachusetts when measured by number of barrels produced, having brewed 4,800 barrels in beer in 2023, according to stats provided to the WBJ Research Department.
Exhibit ‘A’ opened in the former Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers spot in 2016 after that brewery moved to another location in downtown Framingham.
