The City of Worcester has issued just under $3 million in grants designed to boost Worcester’s art and culture scene, with the EcoTarium, The Hanover Theatre & Conservatory for the Performing Arts, Mechanics Hall, the Worcester Art Museum, and Tuckerman Hall all receiving $125,000 each.

In total, $2.95 million was awarded to 41 organizations across the city, with awards ranging from $15,000 to $125,000, according to a City press release issued Tuesday.

The awards were granted as part of the Cultural Organization Grant Program and funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, with applications being evaluated by City staff and members of the ARPA Creative Economy Committee. Priority was given to organizations negatively and disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to our arts and culture community in Worcester, leaving lasting scars on the fabric of our creative ecosystem,” Fabian Barracks, cultural development officer for the City of Worcester, said in the press release. “These pandemic relief grants are more than just financial support: They will help to heal, rebuild, and sustain the vibrant cultural expressions that define our city. Together, we will emerge stronger, ensuring that our arts continue to inspire and unite us all.”

Barracks, a Jamaican-born film producer and theater manager, took over as the City’s cultural development officer in March 2023.
