More than $1 million in federal funds will be awarded to Worcester and a Fitchburg-based commission to plan for economic development efforts in the two cities, the Department of Housing and Urban Development announced.
Worcester will receive $930,000 to create a master plan and economic development study for the former Crompton and Knowles Loomworks at 95 Grand St. as well as plans for the Main South neighborhood in which it's located. Some of the Loomworks buildings contain businesses and housing, but the majority of the site remains vacant.
The Montachusett Regional Planning Commission will receive $129,500 to create a corridor plan for the area around Wachusett Station, a planned stop on the MBTA Commuter Rail Line located in Fitchburg near the intersection of Route 2 and Route 31.
HUD said its Sustainable Communities Grants awarded this year total more than $97 million nationwide and are aimed at helping communities improve their economic competitiveness by connecting housing with jobs, schools and transportation.
