The latest report from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis on gross domestic product totals for 2009 confirmed what many of us already knew: 2009 was a pretty lousy year.
Real GDP for the Worcester metropolitan area declined 3.6 percent in 2009 from 2008. While down, Worcester's GDP suffered far less than others. For example, real GDP for the Las Vegas area dropped 7.6 percent in 2009.
However, Worcester fared worse than several New England cities. Boston was down just 1.8 percent, while the Portland, Maine, area was down 1.3 percent. Hartford's real GDP fell 2.2 percent while Providence's dropped 2.7 percent.
Nationwide, real GDP declined in 80 percent of the metropolitan areas in 2009.
