Debbie Guiney: Drawing Strength From Others

Guiney

President & CEO, AllCom Credit Union, Worcester

Who is your most influential role model, and why?

My mother remains the most influential role model in my life. I know many people feel this way, but she really was a terrific lady. Muriel Hall was a single, hard-working mom who raised four children and was one of the smartest individuals I've ever known. She was not just book smart but had common sense as well: a combination I've found to be uncommon. She instilled in me and my siblings the desire to succeed; however, she never measured success in monetary value, but rather by the effort we put forth and the amount of self-fulfillment we achieved. Most importantly, she had a wonderful sense of humor and the ability to always say the right thing.

What has helped you achieve success in your career?

There have been many experiences and lessons that have helped me achieve success in my career. I recognize my weaknesses as well as my strengths and I've been able to build a great team with talents that complement my shortcomings. I always try to maintain an open mind, even when an opinion or suggestion is contrary to the direction that I would like to take; it's important to be a great listener throughout the process.

What's your primary motivator; or if there is one thing that makes you tick or ignites a passion within you, what is it?

I am passionate about the credit union industry and preserving its place in our society. My primary motivator has always been an innate desire to do the right thing. Whether for AllCom, our members or my family and friends, I always try to put myself in the other person's shoes and empathize with their position. At AllCom, we offer products and services to enhance the financial well-being of individuals.

How does your organization give back to the community, and what role have you played in those efforts?

Veterans Inc., an organization that supports veterans and their families, holds a special place in my heart. I deeply appreciate the sacrifices made by our military so that we can all enjoy the freedoms we do. I am privileged to serve as the committee chair of this year's Gala Military Ball, their primary fundraiser. The entire AllCom staff is a strong supporter of New Hope Inc., an agency devoted to ending domestic violence and abuse. AllCom employees also volunteer through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program at Plumley Village. Additionally, they provide financial literacy training at Plumley Village, Worcester Community Action Council and University Park Campus School.

When the stress level gets too high, how do you ease the pressure?

I take a deep breath and make a special effort to look around and put things in perspective. When things start to go a little awry, I am always aware of how much worse they could be. Having a sense of humor is incredibly important. When I get anxious because something isn't going smoothly, I start cracking bad jokes — they are not bad when others tell them. A round of golf and a glass of red wine are always options as well.

How have you tried to balance your career and your personal life? Please give an example or two.

My husband and I have a dog, Scotch, and dote on several nieces and nephews. We don't have children of our own. Until recently, I've been able to keep a decent balance between the needs of my family and work. I have always marveled at the ability of so many working moms to effectively manage so many balls in the air at once. Truth be known, I have always wondered how successful I would have been if I had had children. Only recently, when I was dealing with my mother's terminal illness, did I have to struggle with managing my own work-life balance. I was truly thankful for the support of our staff, leadership team and board of directors.
