Cultivate, one of the early players in Massachusetts’ recreational cannabis industry, has purchased land in an Uxbridge business park to build a cultivation facility to supplement they existing Leicester operations.
Sam Barber, president of Cultivate, told WBJ the company purchased the land for $2 million from the owners of the 176-acre Campanelli Business Park which is currently under construction.
The company had been considering building a facility of up to 130,000 square feet, but Cultivate will likely split that between Uxbridge and Leicester, the company’s home base where a similar facility is planned.
Between the two and the company’s existing 10,000-square-foot cultivation space in Leicester, the cultivation canopy cannot exceed 100,000 square feet, but the buildings will also house other uses, like product manufacturing, testing and office space.
Splitting the space between both towns provides Cultivate with greater control over both operations, Barber said.
“It’s splitting up the teams so they can focus on what we know they can handle right away,” he said.
Host community agreements, which are required before a company can submit a license application to the state’s Cannabis Control Commission, have been secured with both towns.
Applications have not yet been submitted to the agency.
Other tenants in the Campanelli Business Park currently include medical device manufacturer Medline.
Cultivate, along with New England Treatment Access in Northampton, became the first East Coast recreational marijuana retailer to open last November.
