Consigli Construction Co., Inc. of Milford has been selected by the National Park Service as the general contractor on a project to increase accessibility, improve visitor experience, and build a museum beneath the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The $69-million project will create 15,000 square feet of exhibit space to provide a look at the Lincoln Memorial’s foundations in the monument’s undercroft. New museum exhibits and multimedia presentations will highlight the construction history of the memorial and discuss how it has become a backdrop for civil rights demonstrations.

The project includes new restrooms, a larger bookstore, and a refurbished elevator. Consigli will install new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and security systems, according to a Monday press release from Consigli.

The project is expected to be completed in 2026 to coincide with the 250th anniversary of American independence. The memorial will remain open during construction.

“The undercroft of the Lincoln Memorial, long hidden from public view, offers a fascinating setting to learn more about America’s 16th president and the memorial that honors him,” Jeff Reinbold, superintendent of National Mall and Memorial Parks, said in a press release from the National Park Service.

The public-private partnership project was first announced in 2016 with an $18.5 million donation from businessman and philanthropist David Rubenstein. Including Rubenstein’s donation, to-date, the nonprofit National Park Foundation has contributed more than $43 million to fund the project, with $38.5 million gifted from private donors. The National Park Service has invested more than $26 million toward the project, according to the NPS press release.

“Our Mid-Atlantic team is ready to undertake this critically important project, and we look forward to working collaboratively with the National Park Service and our partners to deliver this once-in-a-lifetime renovation,” Consigli Construction President Matthew Consigli said in the Consigli press release.

Consigli Construction Co. was founded in 1905 and is the largest Central Massachusetts commercial contracts, as ranked by number of local employees, according to data gathered by the WBJ Research Department. The company reported 703 Central Massachusetts employees and 1,420 worldwide employees in June 2022.
