Cisco Systems, the California-based technology giant, has announced that it will cut 182 jobs in Boxborough as part of 6,000 company-wide job cuts.
The local cuts include engineering, software development and administrative positions. The company said none of the employees are represented by a union.
The company had announced in August that it would cut roughly 8 percent of its global workforce.
“This action is expected to be permanent in nature. The employment layoffs are expected to take place on Oct. 10,” said Saidah Grayson, director of legal services for Cisco in a letter informing the state of the Boxborough cuts.
As of 2013, Cisco had 1,240 employees in Central Massachusetts, 1,650 statewide and 75,136 globally. The company is the largest taxpayer in Boxborough with $79.25 million in assessed value, according to 2012 figures.
The state's Rapid Response team went to the Boxborough facility Wednesday to meet with employees affected by the cuts, said Ann Dufresne, communications director for the state’s Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. The team informs affected employees of their benefits and timelines for applications.
“We know that if we can get people to start their job search sooner after they are laid off, the greater the chances of immediately going back to work,” she said. “We encourage people to begin their job search from day one.”
Dufresne said the employees will be directed to the state’s one-stop career centers where they can get more opportunity on resources such as career re-training.
