It's no secret that 2020 was a historic year. From the coronavirus pandemic, to a rapidly fluctuating economy, and even a presidential election, there were no shortage of significant news stories. Here are WBJ's top 10 most read stories of the year.

1. UMass Medical School announces ALS breakthrough

Researchers at UMass Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital have announced a major breakthrough in ALS research: a therapy that suppresses a harmful gene that causes the nervous system disease.

2. Worcester County reports first coronavirus case

The number of confirmed or presumptive coronavirus cases in Massachusetts has soared to 41, the state Department of Public Health said Monday, March 9, including the first in Worcester County.

7. Low-income residents marked for retroactive unemployment benefits

With the state's unemployment rate still hovering close to 10 percent, Gov. Charlie Baker made quick work Monday, Oct. 26 of new legislation that will allow thousands of workers to collect $1,800 in additional unemployment benefits, signing the bill just hours after it landed on his desk.
