Central One Federal Credit Union is staying put in Shrewsbury, where it has long been based. But the credit union has outgrown its space and is adding a new operations center in Auburn.
A 29,000-square-foot building is rising next to Central One's branch at 63 Southbridge St. in Auburn. The credit union will move from its headquarters about 40 loan origination and processing employees to what it is calling its member support center. About 70 will remain in Shrewsbury.
"We don't have a single office or cubicle available there," Central One's president and CEO, David L'Ecuyer, said of the credit union's main office, on Friday.
L'Ecuyer said the new operations center plans are still happening, even as efforts to stop the spread of coronavirus are impacting the world economy.
Central One has more than $555 million in assets, according to the National Credit Union Administration, with four full retail branches and two specialty locations inside Shrewsbury High School and Westborough High School. The credit union is looking for more branch locations, too, L'Ecuyer said, but is striving to find sites with the right attributes, including enough room for drive-up banking.
The Auburn branch has been busy enough that Central one added two drive-up banking lanes and relocated a standalone ATM to near where the new building is rising.
"That branch has been successful right next door," L'Ecuyer said.
