Business Confidence Flat In September

The Associated Industries of Massachusetts Business Confidence Index dipped by one-tenth of a point in September, indicating that businesses are coming to grips with what promises to be a very slow recovery.

The index, which is based on a 100-point scale, edged into positive territory in May and June, when it registered scores of 51.5 and 53.7, respectively.

However, in July, the index dipped to 48.5 and to 47.7 in August. September's score was 47.6.

The index hit its all-time low of 33.3 in February 2009.

AIM said the national economy is dragging down the state's recovery.

"Massachusetts has fared relatively well throughout the downturn because of a favorable industry mix, but the state's economic performance is closely tied to the nation's," AIM said.
