Gov. Deval Patrick, local officials and developers, ceremoniously shoveled the first pile of dirt recently to mark the start of construction for a research and development complex. International wind manufacturer Vestas, based in Denmark, plans to add about 66 jobs at the Marlborough site.
What are Vestas’ plans?
The company has purchased 8.5 acres on Crowley Drive for a 27,000-square-foot facility. Vestas will also lease about 13,000 square feet of space in an adjacent office building.
How large of an investment is this?
The company plans to spend $16 million, which includes acquiring the land and building the facility. Vestas also received a tax increment financing plan from the city of Marlborough and the state, which will phase in the amount of property taxes the company pays in the coming years.
What will be done at the site?
The R&D facility will be used to test and verify electric power generators and converters, according to the company.
It’s expected to open next summer.
Did Vestas have a presence in the area already?
The company has been in MetroWest since 1981.
It has about 34 employees in two offices in Marlborough and Hudson, which will be combined into the new facility.
How large is the company?
Vestas employs about 3,000 in the United States, mostly at its headquarters in Oregon and its major manufacturing site in Colorado. The company has more than 20,000 employees worldwide and has installed 43,000 wind turbines in 66 countries.
What does this move mean for the area?
The groundbreaking of the Vestas development could help kick off other investments along Crowley Drive, said Jon Delli Priscoli, who sold the land to Vestas. Homebuilder Toll Brothers has begun construction on 69 age-restricted housing units along Crowley Drive.
Priscoli said interest has picked up recently among prospective tenants looking to lease space in the vacant 100,000-square-foot office building next to where Vestas hopes to build the R&D facility.
