Bless that Yankee efficiency

Three New England states are among the national leaders in the percentage of newly constructed homes that meet strict federal Energy Star mandates for energy efficiency.

Vermont, Connecticut and New Hampshire had 24 percent, 23 percent and 17 percent, respectively, of all new homes constructed built to Energy Star requirements, according to the U.S.  Environmental Protection Agency. Massachusetts had between 3 percent and 11 percent of its homes certified with the Energy Star label.

Nationwide, nearly 200,000 homes earned Energy Star compliance in 2006. To meet the requirements, a home must be at least 15 percent more efficient than one built to the 2004 International Residential Code.
