BJ’s Wholesale Club, based in Westborough, announced on Thursday it would distribute a cumulative $8 million in bonuses to its hourly club and distribution center staff members.
The bonuses, which will be paid out during August, will total $300 for full-time workers and $150 for those who are part-time. The retailer said the bonuses were in recognition of their team’s hard work.
The move comes as several lower-wage, customer-facing industries -- including retail -- face a worker shortage as employers attempt to ramp up operations following the economic fallout in 2020 caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
In March 2020, at the onset of the pandemic, BJ’s announced it was temporarily raising the pay of hourly workers by $2, with certain key personnel and managers receiving bonuses ranging from $500 to $1,000.
The company’s former president and CEO, Lee Delaney, who died unexpectedly in April, was the highest-paid CEO in the region, with compensation totaling $16.2 million, according to the WBJ Research Department's analysis of BJ's filings with the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission.
