Over 1,000 hires have been made as Big Y continues the process of taking over ownership of eight Massachusetts Hannaford Supermarkets being divested in connection with the merger between Hannaford and Stop and Shop in July.
The over 1,048 people hired include all the management and pharmacists from the former Hannaford stores, including a location in Milford. That store formerly had 140 employees when it was a Hannaford and is now up to 155 employees with hiring ongoing, according to Big Y representatives.
Nearly all of the new hires across the eight stores are former Hannaford employees, who had to apply for the positions, according to Big Y’s Vice President of Corporate Communications Claire D’Amour-Daley. She said that hiring is still ongoing and so that number will be shifting, but that the majority of Hannaford employees have applied for their former positions with Big Y.
Once completed, Big Y will have a total of 79 locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut including 72 supermarkets, 39 pharmacies, Fresh Acres Market, Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors and five Big Y Express gas and convenience locations.
