Baker signs marijuana, millionaire’s tax petitions
Gov. Charlie Baker signed petitions Thursday aimed at placing on the 2016 ballot initiative petitions that would legalize recreational marijuana and add a so-called millionaire's tax to the constitution.
"I did think about this and I decided that if I really believe in this process I should sign these things. So I'm going to sign them," Baker said before signing the petitions presented to him by Boston Public Radio co-host Jim Braude during an interview.
Baker then teased Braude, saying, "And I'm going to figure out which ones you are opposed to and bring them in next month and I'm going to make you sign them."
According to WGBH, Baker signed the petition supported by the group Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol. He also signed a petition being pushed by Raise Up Massachusetts that would amend the constitution to allow the state to tax millionaires at a higher rate.
Asked by Braude if he plans, as of now, to vote against both questions, Baker said "probably."
"You know I'm not a big tax increase guy, but this one in particular, the constitutional amendment, has a long way to go. So we have plenty of time to think about that one," Baker said. "I am definitely going to vote against this one," he added, referring to the recreational marijuana ballot question.
