Assumption Reduces Waste, Weights

Assumption College in Worcester has done away with trays at its dining hall and food court.

The college said "going tray-free" at its Taylor Dining Hall and Charlie's food court will help the environment by reducing the need for the water, energy and chemicals used to wash trays. Diners with physical disabilities will still be able to use trays.

Without trays, students are also more likely to make less wasteful food choices, the college said.

The Taylor Dining Hall is also offering a new, isolated allergen-free pantry and kitchen for students with food allergies and a program called "The Balanced Way" that features prepared, low-fat, 600-calorie meals.
