Assumption University in Worcester broke ground on its new $2.6-million athletic facility on Jan. 9, funded by notable college football coach and alumnus Brian Kelly, according to a story on the college’s website.
The facility will include a new turf field for soccer and softball, as well as a Division II facility with a new scoreboard, sound system, bullpen, and cameras.
It was funded by Brian Kelly, who led the University of Notre Dame team for the last decade, and his wife Paqui Kelly.
In 2020, Kelly launched a $1-million, dollar-for-dollar challenge grant to go toward the facility renovations, which yielded a total of $2.6 million, per the announcement. The multi-sport stadium next to new fields will be called the Brian Kelly '83 Stadium in honor of his contribution.
Kelly received his bachelor’s degree at Assumption, where he played as a middle linebacker on the football team.
During his 11-season career at Notre Dame, Kelly was twice named college football coach of the year by the Associated Press. In November, he became head coach at Louisiana State University.
