For the past decade, Brian Kelly has coached one of the most famous teams in sports: Notre Dame football. It was at his alma mater, Assumption University in Worcester, where Kelly first made a name for himself in the sport.
Kelly, a 1983 graduate, was a middle linebacker for Assumption's football team and was recognized with all-conference honors in the New England Collegiate Football Conference and set a school record for tackles. After graduation, he served as the team's defensive coordinator and was head coach of the softball team.
Now, his name will grace Assumption's renovated multi-sport stadium.
The stadium will be known as Brian Kelly '83 Stadium, the university said Monday, a recognition of contributions from Kelly and his wife, Paqui, to build Assumption's football program and financial support for the school. The naming announcement comes as Assumption remakes much of its athletic facilities, including new baseball, softball and soccer fields.
Thanks to previous contributions, the atrium in the Tsotsis Family Academic Center is named for the Kellys. Kelly also has a $250,000 endowed scholarship for members of the football program that is matched by the university for female student athletes.
Kelly, who has twice been named the Associated Press college football coach of the year, has been the head football coach at Notre Dame since 2009. The team is undefeated this year and ranked second in the country.
