Assumption University in Worcester is now offering women’s ice hockey and men’s swimming as varsity, making it the first institution in the Northeast-10 Conference to sponsor all 24 sports in the NCAA Division II Conference.
The university announced Thursday it will begin recruitment for the two programs immediately, with competition expected for fall of 2023.
“The addition of these two varsity sports provides enhanced recruitment opportunities throughout New England, the nation, and internationally of students interested in intellectual seriousness, thoughtful citizenship, and devotion to the common good,” said Greg Weiner, Assumption’s interim president, in a statement.
Cameron Dwyer, the current women’s swimming coach, has been appointed to coach the men’s swimming team for competition in the 2023-24 academic year. Jack Sweeney, head coach for the Blue & White Sports women’s ice hockey team, will coach the varsity hockey team.
