Franklin medical device company Arthrosurface has launched its newest product: a thumb joint implant for patients with arthritis.
The SpeedSpiral CMC System, according to the company, is the first to replace the arthritic bone with a load-bearing biologic implant.
The implant is a response to osteoarthritis, which Arthrosurface said is second in prevalence only to knee arthritis. Thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis affects up to 33% of women and 11% of men past age 50.
The system utilizes a pre-shaped, dense, strong and flexible allograft implant, Arthrosurface said.
In a statement, CEO Steve Ek said the company had been searching for an effective surgical treatment for over a decade.
“With the guidance of our surgeon design team, I’m convinced we now have it,” Ek said.
