A new Milford bakery is replacing the space left vacant when Ray & Dick’s Bakery closed its doors in 2018 after 50 years.
A new sign recently installed on the building reads “Caney Los Panas Bakery,” which building owner Carlos Souza says will be the name of a new business once licenses and permits are granted.
Souza, a Milford Police Department sergeant, purchased the mixed-use building in March for $350,000.
The bakery, run by a Venezuelan family living in Milford, is working to renovate the space. A business license, Caney Los Panas Restaurant LLC, was granted last month. The business is licensed to Carla Palencia of Milford.
According to Souza, the bakery plans to serve breakfast and lunch, specializing in Venezuelan, Brazilian and American cuisine.
Ray & Dick’s Bakery closed in May 2018 after 50 years of serving fresh baked goods from the 20 Exchange St. space. Owner Mark Auger told WBJ the business wasn’t likely to be passed on to new generations.
The space has sat vacant since then. The Auger family sold the building to Souza in March. Souza said he has been working to improve the building’s facade and infrastructure.
“It’s very important for me to see some life brought to that building,” Souza said.
The building houses a tax service on the first floor and apartments on the top floor, which Souza said will remain.
