Another sprawling warehouse is on the way in Worcester, though the tenant for this one isn't yet known.
Site work has begun on converting a nearly 178,000-square-foot building on Goddard Memorial Drive near the Worcester Regional Airport into new use more than two years after an electrical components factory there closed down.
The future tenant hasn't been disclosed. One potential giveaway — the use of an electric vehicle fleet — is what gave away Amazon as the apparent tenant-to-be for a proposed redevelopment of the Greendale Mall.
"There really is a function of the ultimate tenant demand there," Brandon Kelly, the president and CEO of site owner R.J. Kelly of Burlington, told the Worcester Planning Board in August. "The infrastructure is there so we can accommodate it."
R.J. Kelly, an investment and development firm, hasn't responded to questions about the site's upcoming use. Exterior renderings were not available.
The Worcester Planning Board gave the redevelopment site plan approval in August to allow for new parking lots. That work is underway, as are interior renovations to the building. Parking will have room for about 100 employees and 300 fleet vehicles.
The single-story building at 125 Goddard Memorial Drive was last home to TE Connectivity, a Swiss electrical components company that was the successor to a merger with Madison Cable Corp. The site ceased operations in late 2018.
R.J. Kelly paid $7.2 million to TE Connectivity to buy the site, which stands next to a TJX Cos. distribution center.
