Annual power grid update planned for Wednesday
The New England power grid has a "strong foundation," but still faces vulnerabilities, according the operator of the regional system, ISO-New England.
"ISO New England is facing increasing complexities in operating the grid with a shifting resource mix, and in maintaining markets that are truly competitive while accommodating public policy goals," ISO-New England wrote in an advisory Monday teasing plans for a media briefing on Wednesday.
Gordon van Welie, president and CEO of the Holyoke-based ISO New England, plans to update reporters on the state of New England’s power grid during a 10 a.m. WebEx conference call that will also delve into issues on the horizon and preparations for "the future grid."
During his 2018 briefing, van Welie cited the region's "growing fuel security risk, highlighted by a recent stretch of cold weather," as a concern for reliable operations, and described competitive pricing in the wholesale markets as "challenged by public policy initiatives to procure clean energy at above-market prices."
