Anna Maria College plans to enter into a unique PILOT (payment in lieu of taxes) agreement with the town of Paxton where it is located.
The agreement involves Anna Maria and the town's police department. Under terms of the deal, Paxton police staff will provide consulting services to the college on campus safety. After a 45-day assessment period, the college will begin PILOT payments based on the needs determined during that initial assessment.
As a nonprofit, Anna Maria does not have to pay taxes to the town. There has been increasing pressure in recent years for nonprofit colleges to make PILOT contributions, particularly in Worcester. For example, Worcester Polytechnic Institute agreed in 2009 to make PILOT contributions to fund the Worcester Public Library and Institute Park.
Anna Maria has a campus security staff, which will be supplemented by the additional Paxton police resources, according to Paula Green, a spokesperson for the college.
The monetary value of the PILOT has not been determined, Green said. It will be finalized after the assessment period concludes.
Anna Maria's PILOT dollars will help fund the Paxton Police Department and possibly new staff to work at the college on a regular basis.
