After purchasing the involved properties for a combined $1.18 million in August, the developer behind the planned five-story senior housing development at the former site of the Worcester Boys Club will break ground on the project in early September.
The $52-million project, which will see the construction of 80 units for adults aged 55 and older, is being developed by Boston-based WinnDevelopment and won City of Worcester approval in 2021. F.W. Madigan Co., Inc. of Worcester is handling construction, while Harvard-based Maugel DeStefano Architects is taking care of project design.
“We are excited to begin this important project in the heart of the city,” Jim Madigan, CEO of F.W. Madigan Co., said in a Tuesday press release announcing the groundbreaking. “Over the period of the next 20 months, the view north from Lincoln Square will dramatically transform, as we will be constructing much-needed urban residences here in downtown Worcester.”
The groundbreaking announcement came as an entity purchased three properties involved in the project on Aug. 26. Winn purchased 16 Salisbury St., the former site of the Boys Club, for $1.05 million from B&G Club OZ LLC, a Boston-based entity, according to Worcester District Registry of Deeds records. Wynn also purchased two nearby parcels involved in the project for $125,000 from the City of Worcester.
After some delay, WinnDevelopment announced it would be moving forward with the project in November; the company already operates the nearby Voke Lofts, an 84-unit mixed-income apartment building at 21 Salisbury St.
In addition to the 80 units, the new senior housing will include amenities such as an exercise room, two patios, and a garage.
