Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray announced $275,000 in federal funding that will kick-start the creation of 11 public health districts that would cover 114 communities and more than 1.8 million people.
In Central Massachusetts, Worcester and Acton officials will take the lead in establishing two districts. The Worcester Department of Public Health received a $15,000 planning grant to organize the communities of Aubun, Grafton, Boylston, Holden, Leicester, Millbury, Northborough, Shrewsbury and West Boylston.
Acton received a $30,000 planning grant to organize a district that will include Framingham, Hudson, Southborough, Holliston, Marlborough, Stow, Maynard and Westborough, among others.
The districts will support food protection, disease control, emergency preparedness, septic inspections, tobacco control and the prevention of chronic disease.
The program, which allows for formal, long-term agreements to share resources and coordinate activities among communities, is designed to reduce disparities among local public health systems.
Murray made the announcement during a visit to Worcester City Hall, where he met with local and state health officials. Murray also announced a regionalization conference scheduled for September, where government officials will analyze and discuss collaborative efforts.
