2011 Central Mass. 100

Welcome to the 2011 Central Mass. 100, the region's most complete picture of the companies and leaders that drive the local economy.

The criterion for making it on this list is simple: You need to have a large concentration of employees within the towns that we call Central Massachusetts. The region, as we define it, extends east to Natick, north to the New Hampshire border, south to the Connecticut border and west to Hardwick. The companies are ranked based on the number of local employees, although we include a smattering of additional data on each firm, including statewide employee counts and revenues where available.

This list is compiled by the Worcester Business Journal editorial team, led by our research editor, Sarah Reynolds. The staffers who contributed their time in tracking down the companies listed are: Christina H. Davis, Livia Gershon, Brandon Butler and Matt Pilon.

The Lay Of The List
The 101 companies that qualified for the list this year - we had a three-way tie at the end - are a diversified lot, although there are some clear themes.

Health care related businesses still dominate the list, led by Worcester-based UMass Memorial Health Care, which once again occupies the No. 1 spot with 13,466 local employees. Other companies in the health care industry to make the list include CVS, which has 3,000 employees working its numerous locations in the region, as well as MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham, which has 2,470 workers in the region.

And lest you believe that manufacturing has left our region entirely, there are a number of companies - some even growing - that still make stuff right here in Massachusetts on the list. These include Saint-Gobain, which manufactures abrasives in locales throughout the region, as well as Nypro, which makes high-performance plastics in Clinton.

Of course, not all the companies in the Central Mass. 100 are on a growth trajectory. Fidelity Investments, which is ranked at No. 34, may not qualify next year as it plans to shutter its Marlborough facility and move those jobs to New Hampshire. Marlborough-based Evergreen Solar (No. 41) is still in the top 50, but has announced plans to close its Devens manufacturing plant.

Another growing sector represented on the list is education. The largest college in terms of employment in the region is the fast-growing Quinsigamond Community College, which has 1,119 local employees.

QCC is one of several companies that get extended profiles throughout the special section. The others are noted in the index below.
