COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR AND DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE, Community Legal Aid Inc.
Company location: Worcester
Residence: Worcester
Favorite movie: "The Big Lebowski"
Favorite Book: "Coming To Our Senses," by Jon Kabat-Zinn
Career highlights: After completing a master's degree in geography at Clark University, I began work at Community Legal Aid as an executive assistant. While in that position, I completed a master's in non-profit management at Worcester State and was promoted to my current position.
Community involvement: I serve as president of the Worcester County chapter of the ACLU of Massachusetts, on the board of directors of Dismas House, as vice president of Greater Worcester Women In Development, and as co-president and a founding member of the Mindful Parenting Network.
Biggest success: My biggest success by far is my amazing 2-year-old daughter Maia. I can only take partial credit, because my husband Brian is an incredible parent. Maia embodies great qualities — she's funny, loving, honest, intelligent, sensitive, and playful. In addition, she has made me become a better person — I'm more patient and present.
Biggest challenge: Successfully balancing work, community involvement, and time with my family. I strive to remain mindful and present while engaged in any of the three. That way I can make the most of the time I'm devoting to each and keep myself from feeling overwhelmed by other obligations.
Mentors: My parents, Bob and Debbie, who raised me to care about inequality in society and who showed me how to work to fix it; my husband Brian, my role model in parenting and career success; my supervisors, Jonathan and Faye, who have encouraged me to grow and take on new challenges.
Hidden talent: I play the clarinet. I was in the Pride of Oklahoma (the University of Oklahoma's marching band) throughout college, performing regularly before crowds of 85,000 people.
