2011 40 Under Forty: Thomas C. Dube

VICE PRESIDENT, PRECONSTRUCTION, J.M. Coull

Company location: Maynard

Residence: Fitchburg

Favorite color: My son Charlie’s big, bright, baby blue eyes.

Age: 37

Career highlights: At heart, I’m a builder, and have been since I was a kid. I studied civil engineering at WPI, with construction in mind, and have worked in the industry ever since. I’ve held various positions in the operations end of construction management, and am currently vice president of preconstruction at J.M. Coull.

Community involvement: I was taught early in my career that when you have success, it is important to give back to the community that helped foster that success with whatever time, talent or treasure you can afford. I have endeavored in those ways to support local and worthy nonprofit organizations whose mission it is to help underserved children.

Biggest success: Much of my success derives from sticking to core values, like those at J.M. Coull. Integrity is important — doing the right thing even when it’s difficult. Empathy is too — remembering to see things from another’s perspective. Having an attitude that is solution-driven is the best way to get things done effectively. And to continue to grow, both individually and professionally, you must strive for unrelenting improvement to avoid becoming complacent.

Biggest challenge: In construction, teams are put together very quickly for fairly short durations, and those ad-hoc teams are changed sometimes from project to project. Convincing everyone on the team to subjugate their own interests for the sake of the project can be difficult.

Mentors: Mentors are available wherever you look. I’ve had several, and they are all special for different reasons. One mentor, early in my career, taught me about the nuts and bolts of construction and how to be objective. Another was very professional and taught me a great deal about being a manager and life in general. My current mentor is one I’m simply happy to call a very good friend.

Hidden talent: I’m passionate about golf. My best story is the day I got a hole-in-one and an eagle in one round. I know that it was more luck than talent, but it’s still a great memory.
