2008 40 Under Forty: Mark Federico

Mark Federico

Age: 34

Title: President

Company: MBA Fitness Inc.

Company location: Northborough/Hudson

Residence: Marlborough

Career highlights:

I currently own and operate two co-ed private adult fitness centers in Central Massachusetts. As the owner, I oversee the performance and growth of our facilities and I ensure a positive membership experience for all of our clients. Prior to starting my own business, I spent 10 years in software sales. I opened my first club in Northborough in 2005. In 2006, I purchased and renovated an existing club in Hudson. We are now looking for opportunities to open new clubs.

Community involvement:

Our goal is to be active and give back to the community. We donate used fitness equipment to local schools, fire and police departments. Each year our clubs run an annual Toys for Tots membership drive. Members and staff all participate to make this a very successful program for local kids. With two young children myself, I am very active in youth sports and I volunteer my time to help coach baseball and basketball.

Biggest professional success:

I am most proud of the fact that our staff is passionate about their jobs, our members and the future of our company. To achieve our goals, we need to have a great team. The fact that, as a small company, we have been able to attract and retain such talented people is a great success.

Business-person you admire most:

One person in particular that has helped guide, mentor, and influence me is Tony Quann. As my first landlord, Tony had faith in me and my business plan. As a very successful business person, I find him to be fair, honest and passionate in his business; these are qualities that I carry over into my own business style.

If you weren’t doing the job you’re doing now, what would you do?

I would be in software sales. Prior to opening my first club, I spent 10 years working for a small software company. More than likely, I would be running a sales team, traveling and working with Fortune 500 companies.

Favorite movie:

“Rudy.” It’s the best sports movie ever.

If you were stuck on a desert island, what book would you want to have with you?

I am an avid reader of business and fiction books. However, considering I have never gone camping and I don’t fish — I better have a book on how to survive on a desert island.
