Allison Alaimo
Age: 31
Title: Director of Finance and Development
Company: Massachusetts Veterans Inc.
Company location: Worcester
Residence: Worcester
Career highlights:
I started as a volunteer for Mass. Veterans several years ago, and thought the mission was so important that I began working there full-time. I consider myself very lucky because I actually get paid to do what I love.
Community involvement:
I think it is extremely important to be involved in one’s community — to be aware of our problems and concerns, not just our successes — and to play an active role in assisting to solve our community’s problems. I am on the Citizens Advisory Council in Worcester, which I thoroughly enjoy as it gives me a chance to get others involved. If we want to change the world, we should start in our own backyards.
Biggest professional success:
I would have to say my biggest success has been raising money and starting new programs for veterans and their families. I have more than doubled the agency’s operating budget, and raised millions of dollars for capital projects to develop new programs.
Seeing the growth of the agency over the past few years, and ultimately the number of people in need that are being served, brings a sense of accomplishment, intensified when you hear real life success stories.
Dream job:
I have always wanted to own my own business. I suppose ultimately my goal would be some small business venture, preferably working toward a mission I believe in where I could make my own hours and have the flexibility to do the other things I am interested in.
Businessperson you admire most:
Locally, Francis R. Carroll, chairman of Carroll Enterprises. He is an excellent entrepreneur. He recognized a need in the community and built his business from the ground up. He understands the political process better than anyone I have met, and I have learned a great deal from him.
Favorite movie:
“Casablanca.”
If you were stuck on a desert island what book would you want to have with you?
That’s a tough one… It’s a toss up between John Irving’s “A Prayer for Owen Meany,” and “Paradise Lost” by John Milton. I have not read it, but have always wanted to.
