Two workforce and economic development groups in Central Massachusetts have each won $10,000 state grants to help boost students' interest in manufacturing careers.
MassDevelopment, the state's finance and development agency, awarded the money to the Worcester-based Central Massachusetts Workforce Investment Board and the North Central Massachusetts Economic Development Council, based in Fitchburg. The workforce investment group will use the money to enhance summer internships for math and science teachers, as well as guidance counselors, at local manufacturing companies, which will allow them to share what they learned with students. The board will work with the Blackstone Valley Education Foundation and the Worcester Public Schools in its initiative.
Meanwhile, the North Central council, working with Mount Wachusett Community College and the North Central Massachusetts Development Corp., will use its grant to conduct tours of manufacturing plants for students considering manufacturing parents.
Eight other organizations around the commonwealth also received grants.
