Recruitment agencies represent a valuable resource for job-seekers and employers alike, but trying to select a single agency that best fits your needs as an employer can be overwhelming.
To help navigate those waters, Calvin Jones, a business contributor to the Evening Echo, a UK-based publication, shares some tips for finding and maintaining a strong relationship with recruiting agencies.
Don’t Settle. All recruitment agencies are not created equal.
Doing some online research to determine the various specialty services that are available may help you to find a more tailored agency to fit your needs.
“Some agencies operate on a national basis, others specialize in particular industries, skills or geographic coverage,” says Jones.
Provide Details. The selecting pool of candidates is larger than you might think, and you may find that there are multiple qualified people for a particular position. Providing additional criteria may help your agency to narrow the search.
“While job-specific information is obviously vital, don’t neglect more general information about the company, its culture and the sort of people you want working for you,” says Jones, adding that it’s important to consider the candidates as potential employees instead of only substitutes.
Communication is a two-way street. If you expect your agency to keep you informed of all pertinent recruiting issues, you must be willing to return the favor.
“Make sure you keep your agency in the loop when you either select a candidate they put forward, or find a suitable candidate from another source,” offers Jones.
“Your feedback on the performance of both the candidates put forward and the agency itself will help everyone concerned.”
Cost cutting. Keep in mind that the cheapest option won’t always be your best option. “When choosing an agency it’s important to look at the bigger picture,” says Jones. “The overall package on offer will vary considerably, so go back to your research and make sure you know exactly what you’re getting for your money.”
