10. Go Old School
On-the-job training has recently been overshadowed by developments such as eLearning, but nothing is as effective as on-the-job training.
9. Systematic Results
Results from informal training can often be lackluster. Get consistent, excellent results by following a systematic approach with standards, forms, trained trainers and a procedure for the process.
8. Team Players
Form a team of managers, supervisors and employees to develop the performance standards, presentation guidelines, written tests and the performance evaluations forms for each training session.
7. Train For Training
Employees who are excellent on the job may not be excellent instructors. Provide a “train the trainer” program and certify the new instructor upon completion.
6. Upfront Expectations
Employees do best when they know what is expected of them. Let them know that passing the training program is essential to the job, and that training may occur for new employees or be required for all employees.
5. Pay It Forward
Pay a bonus each time a certified employee trainer provides a scheduled training session. Rewarding the trainer makes a solid statement about management’s commitment to training.
4. Check It Off
A checklist ensures that every aspect of the training process has been covered so that consistent training is delivered.
3. Know The Process
Give an overview to explain how the job/outcomes fit within the company. Explain how the job is done to meet performance standards. Demonstrate the skill. Ask trainee to try the task and provide feedback.
2. Keep Them Separated
Do not schedule the trainee or trainer for “real work” during training, as both the training and the work could be compromised.
1. Recognize And Respond
Send a letter of recognition from the personnel department or a manager with an evaluation form to provide feedback for the trainer and the training process.
