In 1971, Peter Pellegrino started P. Pellegrino Trucking company with a single box truck, picking up trash for residents in Worcester. Through the years, this one-man operation expanded into a family-run enterprise, providing waste removal, recycling, and document shredding services to commercial, industrial, and municipal customers in Central Massachusetts. From its humble beginnings until today, the core principles and foundations of the company remain the same: listening to our customers’ needs and always putting them first.
While Pellegrino has grown its customer base and fleet, the company remains a local family-owned business. Peter’s wife, Dianne, has assumed the role of president, sons Steven and Marc and daughter Deanna all share responsibilities within the company. Marc noted that Peter and Dianne’s grandchildren also work for the business. “We are entering our third generation,” he said. Additionally, every employee becomes part of the family, reflecting the ethics and professionalism that its founder embraced. The company boasts a low turnover rate with most employees enjoying a 10+ year career.
Pellegrino’s products and services for trash and recycling include 2 yard to 10 yard front load containers; 10 yard to 40 yard roll off rentals; 2 yard to 45 yard stationary and self-contained compactors; and residential subscriptions for curb-side pick-up.
With the serious issue of identity theft, Pellegrino started a Secure Mobile Document shredding division in 2008, offering secure on-site shredding services, as well as hard drive destruction and electronic recycling. The company also conducts shredding events for local businesses and non-profit organizations. Since 2008, Pellegrino has been a member of i-Sigma (International Secure Information Governance and Management Association), which requires a specific code of conduct to ensure all documents are properly and safely destroyed and not recoverable.
Pellegrino collects hundreds of tons of recyclable materials per year and delivers them to local MRFs (Material Recovery Facilities). Marc reported that Massachusetts imposes many waste bans on communities and businesses. These bans have provided opportunities for Pellegrino to expand the recycling division of their company. To address the issue of food waste recycling, the company is looking into developing an organic food waste recycling program to enable customers to comply with Massachusetts regulations.
Community service sits at the heart of Pellegrino Trucking. The company has sponsored many athletic teams, including Shrewsbury baseball and softball teams and Hudson deck hockey teams. Pellegrino also supports various events for local non-profit organizations, including the Worcester Animal Rescue League and the Kindness Coalition. The company has supported golf tournaments for the Massachusetts Police Association and Shrewsbury Firefighters. Pellegrino has donated its time and equipment to the Spirit of Shrewsbury and Shrewsbury Fall Festival events.
The company will continue to build on the very foundation its founder, Peter Pellegrino, started with integrity, dedication, and personalized service. As the company grows, innovates, and integrates sustainable technologies, it will never stray from principles that are deeply rooted in always keeping the focus on all of their customers.
