Nativity Worcester’s commitment to students goes far beyond helping them achieve academic success, but also has enhanced wrap-around services in order to best support our Nativity Men and their families, knowing that factors both inside and outside of the classroom have an impact on their ability to succeed. During the COVID-19 pandemic, faculty members are in constant contact with students in an attempt to mitigate any learning loss occurring during the school closure. Students receive work from teachers and log their progress each day to be verified by a parent or guardian. Teachers are checking in weekly with their advisory group (a small group of 5-6 students) to see if they need help with any assignments, how they are staying productive and helping at home, while also identifying any areas of need that crop up for the student or family. Based on teacher feedback, members of the school’s student support team are also reaching out to help with any emotional or academic concerns that students or families have. Nativity Worcester staff and faculty have developed deep relationships with families, which has always allowed them to serve their students in a more personalized way.
Second, Nativity Worcester established a food pantry in 2018 to help address the issue of food insecurity that some of their students face. During the last two school years, 10-15 families received weekly food bags through the food pantry. Knowing that every student would not be receiving the two meals and two snacks provided daily at school during the closure, the school increased its food pantry output by 400% in the course of 2 days, supplying food to every family of a current student and 15 families of graduates who were in need. Providing food on a weekly basis is one step to help alleviate that added pressures of food insecurity, loss of income, and additional child care burdens faced by Nativity Worcester families. In rotating small groups, faculty and staff pack food bags, purchase needed food items, restock the food pantry with donated supplies, and then distribute food to families.
1. Continue to provide a quality, all-scholarship education to underserved boys of all faiths in Worcester through both traditional and modified delivery methods that ensure the safety and wellness of all students and staff.
2. Through our Graduate Support Program, continue to effectively track, support, and mentor students once they have graduated from Nativity Worcester, ensuring each student’s success in high school and access to higher education in an environment filled with uncertainties.
3. Deepen existing wrap-around services to students, graduates and families to best position them for success inside and outside of the classroom.
Nativity School of Worcester hosts two fundraising events during the year; the annual Spring Auction features silent and live auctions, student presentations, and more. Historically, over 200 attendees generously contribute over $200,000. Individuals can participate by becoming event sponsors, purchase tickets and auction items, donate to the fund-in-need and more. The Nativity Worcester and Clarke fundraiser and gala is a unique culinary event hosted at Clarke, New England’s official Sub-Zero, Wolf & Cove Showroom and Test Kitchen. Attendees enjoy food prepared by world-class chefs and participate in a program, which features a student speech and raise-the-paddle aimed at supporting school programs.
Nativity Worcester does not receive financial assistance for operations from the College of the Holy Cross, the Diocese of Worcester or the state and federal government. The school relies instead on the generosity of individuals, foundations, and corporations. Donations to Nativity Worcester can be made online at www.nativityworcester.org or check by mail. Nativity Worcester seeks support from the community in various ways such as our fundraising events in the fall and spring, year-round fundraising appeals by mail. We encourage individuals to consider sponsoring a student to attend Nativity Worcester, donate to the school Food Pantry, support our Holiday Wishlist items, which include, gift cards to discount stores or grocery stores, winter jackets, hats and gloves and various food items for family holiday bags.
We continually seek volunteers to assist with various aspects of the Nativity Worcester community. Volunteer opportunities at Nativity Worcester include serving as tutors and mentors for students, building clean-up projects, helping with the school’s community garden, engaging volunteers in creative ways to bring their skills, talents, and interests into After School programming, PTA programming and serving on fundraising event committees.
