1. Promote an organizational culture of diversity and inclusion with a focus on our No Place for Hate initiatives, and participate in a research study, conducted by Simmons University in partnership with the African Bridge Network, to learn about existing practices that may create disparities for foreign-born or people of color in reaching leadership roles within human services and within our organization.
2. Launch the Smart Data for Better Healthcare pilot project, with CDDER at UMass Medical School, to bridge the gap between the healthcare system and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
3. Scale the successful Neurodiversity @ Work initiative, currently a collaboration with Dell Technologies, to other corporations. The project matches the talent acquisition needs of corporations with the employment aspirations of highly skilled people with autism, so far leading to nine well-paying job placements in the data science field.
4. Grow HMEA’s Cloud4Causes business, providing best-in-class IT solutions for nonprofits at preferred pricing. Cloud4Causes’ 35 current customers receive hosting, networking, and help desk services.
5. Continue to identify and refine standardized key performance indicators to improve service engagement and service quality through data analytics, and to create efficiencies.
HMEA’s incredABLE 5K: On May 17, 2020, HMEA will host its 19th Annual incredABLE Day, a 5K run, community walk, and day of family fun, held at Dell in Franklin. The event attracts over 2,000 attendees and requires 200 volunteers to meet our goal of fundraising $200,000, which is returned to our Residential, Day Services, Children’s, and Family Supports programs to sustain our mission. Sponsored by dozens of local and national partners, the day includes free, family-friendly activities for all abilities. Participants are provided comprehensive resources to assist in fundraising and information-dissemination efforts in their communities.
5K For Autism Acceptance: Held annually in April and now located in Worcester, HMEA’s Autism Resource Central hosts its 5K run and walk for autism acceptance. A community of over 3,000 attendees and more than 100 volunteers come together for a day of all-ages family fun and entertainment. With the goal of raising $150,000, proceeds from the event support the continued provision of high-quality services and supports for children and adults with autism, and their families, in Central Massachusetts.
Annual Fall Appeal letters are distributed to the HMEA community, sent to families, volunteers, donors, businesses, and other key stakeholders, to ask our audience to consider making a life-changing donation as we approach the annual season of giving. The letter features snapshot personal stories of some of the impactful ways HMEA’s services have empowered supported individuals, and their families, to reach for independence.
Spring Appeal letters are sent prior to the close of HMEA’s fiscal calendar, inviting all supporters who have made a donation in the past, but have yet to make a donation during the current year, to do so.
In-Kind Donations are gratefully accepted throughout the year, and may include therapeutic equipment, adaptive exercise, assistive technology, or communication devices; home furnishings; and more. Donations of raffle prizes, advertising, goods, and services for fundraising events are very appreciated.
Other: Event- and appeal-specific text-to-give campaigns provide a convenient alternative to traditional fundraising methods and are advertised via social and print media. Secure donations through HMEA.org, AmazonSmile, and RoundUp are accepted year-round.
In the previous fiscal year, over 400 volunteers generously donated their time and talents to ensure the services delivered every day by HMEA, as well as special events, were successful. Annually, the greatest need for volunteers coincides with HMEA’s two major fundraising events in the Spring, where helpers assist in everything from event planning and community outreach, to painting faces and serving burgers. Many high school students with interests in the human services field participate in volunteer partnerships with HMEA during their school year, sharing their skills and passions and working with program supervisors, direct support staff, and program participants. Opportunities for corporate or community organization volunteerism may be customized to align the goals and skills of the volunteers with HMEA’s needs, to advance social responsibility goals, to improve the service quality HMEA can provide, and to strengthen community connections.
