Which industries does Boutwell Owens currently serve?

We have a well-diversified customer base that extends across North America into Europe and the Pacific Rim.  Our customers include the medical, pharmaceutical, health care, automotive, food, and electronic industries as well as other markets. We do business with several national brands such as Champion, the oil, and air filter manufacturer, and Proctor & Gamble.  We also have clients in the pharmaceutical and health care fields.  All accounts, regardless of size, have unique needs and receive the same personal attention relevant to those needs.

How do your special licenses benefit the company?

Boutwell Owens holds special certificates and licenses that qualify us to work with major brands. We hold a printer certificate with Walmart and CVS, which allows us to use different digital printing techniques for their products. Additionally, Boutwell Owens is licensed by Disney to create its packaging and with AIB International, an organization that works to elevate safety standards in the food industry. These certificates and licenses make Boutwell Owens a better company.

How do your employees contribute to your success?

You can have the best equipment available, but it’s the people and the workmanship that make all the difference. Boutwell Owens prides itself on having the best craftspeople in the industry. We all work together to make this a better company and strive to create a family-type business. All of our employees work toward a common goal of providing our customers with the best product possible.

What factors make Boutwell Owens unique?

We manufacture an assortment of paperboard packaging products, including folding cartons, blister and insert cards and sustainable packaging. To address the various needs of our customers, we have diverse equipment. This means we can produce as little as one item or as many as the customer requires. We also assist start-up companies with an eye on the bottom line and the best way to brand themselves. On the flip side, we help large OEM manufacturers who require tight inventory management and control over products, while maintaining brand consistency and meeting manufacturing needs. We act as consultants to find the best package designs, structure designs and graphics to help customers remain competitive.

Recently, Boutwell Owens was first in the industry to create a fraud detection method. We designed OwenGuard ™, a unique anti-counterfeiting technology that is seamlessly integrated into the printing process. OwenGuard™ is undetectable to the naked eye and offers protection against product piracy.

What green practices have you implemented?

More than 30 years ago, we decided to become a much more environmentally responsible company to our employees, our city and our customers. We eliminated solvents and carcinogens from our manufacturing process altogether. We have a social responsibility to take care of our employees and are proud to be solvent free.

We also buy carbon offsets from farmers who erect windmills on their property so our plant is 100 percent carbon neutral.

What awards has Boutwell Owens won?

Through the years, we have won a number of awards, including the Best Workplace in The Americas and several medals from the printing association. We display these awards in the employee break room. They earned them and this is a way to applaud, promote and commend the employee for their achievements which are well deserved.

How is Boutwell Owens involved in the community?

Boutwell Owens holds our relationship with BCI Behavioral Concepts near and dear. This fantastic group works with autism support and development. This group rents space in one of our facilities, serving the community and individuals with autism. Boutwell Owens provides support where needed and donates material items that make a difference. We recently purchased a bouncy house for the children to use on special occasions.

Our company also conducts bottle and can drives periodically. We support scouts and donate to several local non-profit organizations. In December, we have a Giving Tree and collect toys and clothes. Right after 9/11, we asked employees which organizations they would like to support. We then focused on specific ones the employees identified and continue to contribute to them.

We encourage our employees to support the community. For instance, if an employee coaches an athletic team on a volunteer basis, we give the individual award certificates and recognize him or her for giving back to the community. We are fortunate to have such a great employee base that value their community.

What do you foresee for the future?

We are very comfortable sticking to what we know best – printed paperboard packaging. We constantly strive to improve and seek new opportunities, while staying true to our core capabilities. Our entire team intends to push ourselves and our equipment to their limits, increasing our standards, always with the customer as our primary focus.
