What’s the outlook for 2015?

There was more optimism among Central Massachusetts business leaders heading into 2014. There's even more heading into 2015. Here are the results of this year's Economic Forecast survey, along with out predictions for the year ahead and our report card on how our predictions for 2014 turned out.

Sevcon posts Q4 loss despite jump in revenue

Southborough-based Sevcon posted an operating loss of $94,000 in its fiscal fourth quarter, thanks to one-time expenses. But the maker of microprocessor-based controls for electric and hybrid vehicles reported quarterly and yearly revenue gains of 13 and 18 percent, respectively, on Tuesday afternoon. Revenue for the fourth quarter, which ended Sept. 30, totaled $10 million, up from $8.9 million a year earlier, while revenue for the year rose to $37.9 million from $32.2 million.

What will Southborough look like in 25 years? Town leaders and economic development experts have opened that discussion, beginning with the Southborough 2040 Business & Nonprofit Summit Thursday morning. Hosted by the Southborough Economic Development Committee, the event was an opportunity for business and local government officials to collectively ponder the town's business climate and how it should be developed to stay competitive with neighboring towns, said committee chairman Dave McCay. “What should the town and specifically the (Economic Development Committee) be doing to prepare for Southborough in 2040?,” McCay asked Thursday morning in the Putnam Family Arts Center on the campus of St. Mark's School.

Reliant, Southboro Medical to merge Jan. 1

Reliant Medical Group of Worcester and Southboro Medical Group will become one at the start of next year as the two healthcare provider organizations complete their withdrawal from Atrius Health. Reliant announced Wednesday that the two organizations have reached an agreement to merge effective Jan. 1. Together, the two medical groups will employ more than 2,500, including 300 physicians and hundreds of other healthcare professionals, serving about 300,000 patients throughout Central Massachusetts and MetroWest.
