Downtown is Marlborough’s next frontier for redevelopment

The work Marlborough planners did to create a mixed-use overlay district in the city's southwest quadrant paid off, now that several development proposals are in the works. But now they're turning their attention away from the office parks that line Interstate 495, and inward to downtown. It's not that downtown Marlborough is in dire straits. Mark Racicot, land use planning director for the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), said its ample parking, historic architecture and quaint streetscape elements — such as ornamental lighting — make Marlborough's downtown the envy of many other communities. ”There are so many communities that would love to have what Marlborough has,” Racicot said.

BSX posts strong Q3

Marlborough-based Boston Scientific Corp. (NYSE: BSX) saw revenue climb 6 percent over 2013 in the third quarter, driven largely by sales of its cardiovascular products, according to an earnings statement released Tuesday. Net sales for the company totaled $1.8 billion in the quarter ended Sept. 30, up from $1.7 billion a year earlier. Earnings per share increased to 3 cents, compared with less than a penny per share a year earlier, on net income of $43 million. That's a turnaround from a net loss of $5 million in the third quarter of 2013.

Positive results for ACT stem cell treatment

A stem cell-derived eye treatment from Advanced Cell Technology (ACT) of Marlborough has been found to have long-term safety in a study where some patients showed improved vision. The study, published in “The Lancet,” followed 18 patients to evaluate the safety and tolerability of human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) cells following sub-retinal transplantation into patients, according to a release from ACT. The proprietary cells from ACT were implanted for the treatment of Stargardt's macular degeneration (SMD) and dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The study demonstrated positive long-term safety results, according to ACT.

Marlborough council OKs GE Healthcare Life Sciences tax break
