An apparent plan by Worcester Polytechnic Institute to buy two hotel properties with the intent of converting them into student housing has upset some of the city’s most prominent business and political leaders.

The Veterinary Urgent Care Center system has broken ground on a new Worcester veterinary hospital location slated to start accepting patients come November.

"Enough is enough," Gov. Maura Healey declared Friday as she announced that all the bankrupt Steward Health Care hospitals still up for sale have new owners lined up and that the state is going to assist in the transitions with financing and, in one case, the use of its property-taking powers.

The owners of an apartment building in Upton, one of whom is the owner of a Worcester apartment complex that saw a roof collapse in 2022, have sold the Upton property for $6 million just over 14 months after they purchased it for $1.7 million.

This year’s winners were chosen from 398 nominations submitted for 221 professionals in 2023 and 2024.

This special edition is a celebration of everything the 40 Under Forty has meant to the Central Massachusetts business community over the last 25 years, with a heavy focus on the incoming Class of 2024.

The property is part of the Elm Park Neighborhood Local Historic District, a designation the area received in 2023.
