C-sections can double birthing costs

An important new study by the Leapfrog Group shows that more than 60 percent of the reporting hospitals have excessive rates of Cesareans, or C-sections. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Cesarean birth has increased greatly since it was first measured in the '60s, and today, one in three women have C-sections.

HEIDI M. LANDERS and REBECCA LYNCH were hired by Worcester social service agency The Bridge of Central Massachusetts. Landers is director of nursing. A resident of Barre, she is a graduate of Worcester State University, with a bachelor's degree in nursing and earned a master's degree in healthcare administration from Salem State University. Lynch was named director of development and marketing. Before joining The Bridge, she worked for Natick Visiting Nurse Association and The Price Center in Newton. Lynch has a bachelor's degree from Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif., and a master's degree from Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, Calif., both in English.

Reliant Medical Foundation awards $50K in grants

The Reliant Medical Group Foundation has distributed $50,000 in grants to 18 nonprofits across Central Massachusetts in its latest round of giving, the foundation announced Wednesday.

Harrington receives $10K for behavioral health unit

Harrington HealthCare System has received a $10,000 donation from Southbridge-based Savers Bank that officials say will help the organization fund expansion of behavioral health services at its Hubbard Hospital campus in Webster.
