The same presentation noted new housing developments in Worcester have an average per-unit asking rent of $2,310 per month.
Studio rent prices at The Revington, a 228-unit mixed-use apartment building near Polar Park opened in 2023, start around $2,000, with two-bedroom apartments ranging from $3,282 to $3,469, according to listings on Apartments.com. A few blocks away on Green Street, studios at The Cove, a 173-unit development opened in October, also start at around $2,000, with two-bedroom units going for between $3,975 to $4,465.

To answer Deborah's question... Many renters do not have sufficient cash to pay the required downpayment which is required to purchase a property.
Additionally, many "renters" have roommates with whom to share the burden of the monthly rent.
The issue as I see it is with the subsidized apartments. When the government pays above market rate monthly payments to owners of apartment buildings it does not give an accurate reading on actual market monthly rent. The spike in rents is also due to the higher cost of taxes, insurance, and utilities. Supply and demand factors in but due to the tenant favored housing rules in MA. owners of smaller apartments buildings refuse to lease in fear of the tenant from hell and it turn less apartments to meet demand.
I'm confused. If rent costs so much more than a mortgage payment, why do people rent? Or is my thinking shewed because I live in the suburbs and have a low monthly mortgage payment? Before we bought, rent was lower than the mortgage would be...that was the positive for not building equity in having your own house.

How about this question: What percentage should rental-apartment housing developers receive in tax breaks when they provide at least 25% of their units at prices affordable to financially struggling tenants? And should all such developers be legally required to take such tax breaks, to provide such units?
