Eric Dickson, the president and CEO of UMass Memorial Health Care in Worcester, will donate his paycheck to the UMass Emergency Assistance Support for Employees Fund until Gov. Charlie Baker lifts the state of emergency declaration, the healthcare provider announced in a Friday press release.

CEO Eric Dickson said while UMass is grateful for the few million dollars in donations it garners each year, they don’t even compare to hospitals in Boston, who tend to generate tens of millions of dollars in philanthropy every year.

Faced with declining patient discharge numbers and seeing a chance to pare costs that didn’t directly affect patients, UMass Memorial Health Care leaders in Worcester made a tough financial choice to cut much of its executive ranks.

In our effort to attract the best and brightest doctors, nurses and other caregivers to Worcester, our future colleagues have a healthy stock of homes to choose from. An inadequate stock puts employers in the region at a competitive disadvantage.
