First elected to the Massachusetts Senate in 2022 in an election where she defeated Worcester Mayor Joe Petty, Kennedy is helping to lead the next generation of progressive politicians.

At the Legislature, Kennedy is the chair of the Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities and vice chair of the Joint Committee on Mental Health, Substance Use and Recovery, and she serves on committees on racial equity, civil rights, agriculture, education, and public health. As the committee chair, she prioritizes strengthening the safety net and ensuring policies reflect the lived realities of residents.

Kennedy said her proudest moments have been the annual opportunities to honor community leaders through the Black Excellence on the Hill Award, the Latino Excellence Award, and the Commonwealth Heroine Award through the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women.

Brad Kane is editor of the Worcester Business Journal.
