Amanda Newmiller exemplifies homegrown leadership, rising from Worcester’s triple-deckers to become a driving force in statewide economic development.

At MassDevelopment, she has awarded $12 million in funding supporting 49 projects across Mass. since 2022, focusing on converting abandoned sites into clean, actively used, tax-generating properties. Her work accelerates private-sector investment in industrial, commercial, and mixed-use projects while increasing the inventory of project-ready development sites. During her tenure with the City of Worcester, Newmiller shepherded transformative projects including CitySquare, where she witnessed downtown’s transition from mall demolition to a thriving district with 365 housing units, 168 hotel rooms, and 550 parking spaces.

She played crucial roles in redeveloping the Worcester County Courthouse into 118 housing units and the old Boys Club into 80 units, while serving on the steering committee that implemented Worcester’s first Business Improvement District. She concluded a meaningful term on the YWCA Central Massachusetts board in June, co-chaired development committees, and served on multiple civic initiatives, including Leadership Worcester’s 2016 class. Her creative vision led to the “I Am Worcester” campaign, culminating in a temporary art installation celebrating the city’s residents. She runs marathons to fundraise for military veterans and autism research.

What actor would play you in a movie? Hilary Swank. I was told I looked like her once at the grocery store, and I’m still flattered.

Best restaurant in Central Mass.? As a Clarkie, I will always have a soft spot for Dalat.
